Negotiations are one of the most important – and most challenging – aspects of peacebuilding. As Nelson Mandela once said (updating an old adage) – “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”
Protection activities are fundamental to peacebuilding efforts and humanitarian programs. At its core, protection deals with safeguarding civilians. The international community tackles this issue through a range of different lenses, including international law, environmental issues, gender-based programs, property law and mine safety.
There is no single definition of peace and no single way to quantify security or stability. To help readers navigate the complex and nuanced world of peace and security, Peacebuilding Deeply has compiled a list of the most commonly used terms, bringing together definitions and insights from some of the leading organizations, practitioners and experts working on these issues.
Conflicts are easy to start, but much more difficult to prevent or stop.
When Martin Luther King Jr. stood outside a California prison where Vietnam war protesters were being held on December 14, 1967, he stated: “There can be no justice without peace and there can be no peace without justice.”
